The Object

Mei made the first one for herself.

Late 2022. She had voile left over from a curtain project. She cut a long rectangle, hemmed the edges, sewed a single inside button and a tie belt. Wore it around her flat for two weeks.

We saw it at her stand at the next fair. She'd worn it that morning. We asked if she could make us one in sage.

It isn't a bathrobe. The Robe is our other piece, heavier, terry, after-bath. This one is lighter, looser, longer. The hour before bed, not the minute after the shower.

145 cm length back. Drops past the knee on most. Dropped shoulder, sleeves that drape past the wrist. Single button inside to keep it closed without binding. Belt that ties at the waist.

Slip and Lunya both make versions. Slip's polyester satin runs $250. Lunya's washable cotton runs $198. Ours is GOTS-certified organic cotton voile, made by hand in Covent Garden, $138. We don't market it as silk. It isn't.

Five colors. Sage was Mei's first. Charcoal sells most.

What you're holding

Voile is the trick. Everything else follows.

Most lounging robes use satin (slippery, hot in summer) or terry (heavy, takes an hour to dry). Voile is what bridal robes use. Light. Breathable. Translucent enough to hint at the body, dense enough to keep you covered. It drapes the way silk would but washes the way cotton does.

We use 80 gsm GOTS-certified organic cotton voile from Tirupur, where the long-staple cotton makes the weave hold up across hundreds of washes. The kimono cut keeps it loose, no waist seam, no fitted shoulder. Mei french-seams everything because raw edges fray voile fast.

Common questions.

Is this a bathrobe?

No. The Robe is. The Kimono is lighter, cotton voile, 80 gsm. It's a lounging piece for the hour before bed or the morning after, not for stepping out of a shower. If you want post-bath weight and absorbency, get The Robe.

Is voile see-through?

A little. Hold a hand behind it and you'll see the outline. Wear something underneath if you want full coverage. For most lounging contexts, at home alone or with people you live with, the translucency is part of the appeal.

How does the size run?

Generously. S fits UK 6–10, M fits UK 10–14, L fits UK 14–18. Dropped shoulder by 4 cm, so the fit isn't fitted. Most people stay with their usual size. If you're between two, size down, the cut is loose either way.

Is the cotton actually organic?

Yes, GOTS certified through the Soil Association in the UK. The voile is woven in Tirupur from long-staple organic cotton. Certificate on file.

How does it wash?

Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or line dry. Iron warm if you care about it being smooth. Voile is forgiving, it doesn't pill, doesn't shrink past the first wash, doesn't fade for at least 50 cycles. The lifespan we see in returns and re-orders sits around 4–6 years of daily wear.

What's the return policy?

30 nights. Wear it. If the cut isn't right, send it back. UK return shipping is on us. International, you pay return. We don't ask questions about the reason.
